After what appears to be a break in, Leigh is thrown into a nightmarish spiral as she struggles to protect her son and herself. What really sets Blood on Her Name apart narratively though is that Leighs downfall is completely self made. Not only is the break in not what it first seems to be, but its her maternal instincts that drive her to return the dead body of the intruder to his family, setting a fatal chain of events in motion that its impossible to look away from. Rising Creek Even though Pope crafts an unrelentingly bleak atmosphere that leaves clammy fingerprints on your skin, Blood on Her Name is Linds film. Shes a bundle of frenetic energy, cold one minute and loving the next. Shes unpredictable and unreliable, but through Linds masterclass performance is ultimately a painfully relatable protagonist. Will Patton offers up an engaging foil as Leighs corrupt cop father who just happens to be investigating the very death that his daughter and grandson were responsible for. Fresh off a brilliant stint in Swamp Thing, Patton brings some real Southern Gothic to the character who is equally charming and chilling as he tries to help his daughter in the best way he can. At 85 minutes long, Blood on Her Name harks back to the classic era of Hollywood thrillers. It doesnt waste a minute of its runtime and Lind commands your attention for every moment as shes on screen pretty much the entire time. Theres something so moving and powerful about the authenticity and fear that emanates from this film; its like watching your worst case scenario play out in front of you. Pope does an excellent job of keeping the tension high right up until the end. Blood on Her Name is unlike any other film released this year. Its vision of womanhood, motherhood, and the broad idea of a female led movie that upsets what viewers have come to expect. Easily one of the most interesting and best crafted films of the year, if theres any justice, Blood On Her Name should be the low budget word of mouth hit of the year. Loosely related to dramas like Frozen River, in which the perils inherent to the working-class crime film are complicated by single motherhood, Matthew Pope's Blood on Her Name watches as a woman's attempt to rid herself of a dead body soon has her wishing she'd just called the cops on herself. A tense debut built around a compelling lead performance by Bethany Anne Lind, it benefits from a couple of graceful storytelling flourishes and a persuasive sense of character. Prospective distributors shouldn't take its Fantasia premiere as a sign that its audience is limited to genre die-hards. Leigh Tiller (Lind) runs a failing auto garage once owned by her now-incarcerated husband. Her widowed father Richard (Will Patton) is the town sheriff, but some rift between the two leaves Leigh fairly stranded in this isolated town; the closest thing she has to a friend may be Rey (Jimmy Gonzales) the only mechanic she's able to keep on payroll. But Rey's duties don't include dead-body disposal. The body is dead from the start. The movie will only explain how he got that way piecemeal over its running time, like a dishonest witness whose story can't hold up under cross-examination. What's clear immediately is that Leigh panics, and the first steps she takes to cover things up doom her to what follows — if only because her humanity keeps her from behaving as a killer would: She has the dead man in a boat and is ready to toss him into a lake when the phone in his pocket chimes with voicemail. Turns out he has a son who's worried that he didn't come home last night. Leigh can't let him and the boy's mother spend their lives wondering if the man just ran off. She risks a lot to leave the body where they will find it; then, far from the evidence, she realizes she may have left bread crumbs that will lead back to her. Lind navigates an emotional minefield as Leigh spends the next day or two trying to dig herself out of this jam. There's her concern for her son Ryan (Jared Ivers) a teenager who's already on probation and may be headed toward his dad's fate; her resentment for the father she's forced to leave Ryan with; and her need to keep Rey from deducing why she's suddenly so irritable and secretive around the garage. In his smaller role, Gonzales stands out as the story's most morally uncompromised character; Rey wants to help before he knows what the problem is, and the actor projects a concern complicated by the things Rey accidentally oversees. (In between attempts to fix the mess she's in, Leigh does some illicit self-medicating. ) If Pope and Don M. Thompson's script is a little coy about how the man in the garage got himself dead, the parallel mystery of what lingers between Leigh and her father unfolds more gracefully. Pope offers nicely staged flashbacks, some drug-induced, in which Leigh witnesses childhood trauma from multiple perspectives. Leigh's present-tense problems may all trace back to her trying to protect others — innocent bystanders, a dead man's loved ones, a son who may soon have two parents in prison. But when the film's title hints at an original sin responsible for all this grief, it's no misdirection. As if to prove that the number 13 is truly unlucky - as superstitious people have been telling us for years - the 13th Apollo space mission was a catalogue of disastrous mishaps from start to finish. Ron Howard directs this film version of the events surrounding the ill-fated mission with great attention to the technical detail, making it almost documentary-like in approach. But while some documentaries are rather cold and distant, Howard remembers to keep the emotional drama in his film tense and involving, just as it must have been as the events unfolded for real back in the spring of 1970.
Astronaut Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks) has long dreamed of setting foot on the moon, and gets his chance when chosen to be a member of the Apollo 13 moon landing mission in 1970. The three man team also includes Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon) and Fred Haise (Bill Paxton. During their flight to the moon, the three astronauts make regular live transmissions that they believe will be televised down on Earth. However, their TV slot has been axed without them knowing it, as no-one seems particularly interested any more in the rather dull and technical terminology associated with space travel. The mission is destined to become the centre of everyone's attention, however, when a routine oxygen tank procedure goes awry and leads to an explosion. The Apollo shuttle is suddenly marooned in space, with little power, little control and little air. The objective of landing on the moon is replaced with the sole aim of getting the astronauts back home alive. In Houston, scientists struggle against the odds to plan a way to bring the astronauts back to safety, working around the clock to solve various logistical problems facing them. Meanwhile, Lovell's wife Marilyn (Kathleen Quinlan) must hold together her family as they face the terrifying possibility of losing their beloved Jim. And aboard the shuttle itself, the three astronauts endure several days of unrelenting doubts and fears as their very lives hang by a thread.
Apollo 13 is a superb recreation of the true story. Its most impressive achievement is that it manages to generate genuine gnawing tension in spite of the fact that most viewers already know the outcome. The performances are first-rate throughout, with Hanks, Bacon and Paxton exceptional as the endangered space travellers, Quinlan totally convincing as Lovell's distraught wife, and Ed Harris in commanding form as the mission controller sweating it out down in Houston. William Broyles Jr and Al Reinert provide an excellent script, which makes absolute sense of the potentially confusing technical dialogue, and also explores the emotional toll of the ordeal realistically and effectively. The final scene especially, in which communication is lost as the astronaut's re-enter the Earth's atmosphere, is so taut that you can feel your heart thumping inside your chest. The film is a celebration of human determination – some have criticised it for its unapologetic flag-waving and patriotism but such criticisms seem, to me, to be missing the point. This is not so much about America conquering the odds, more a film about the human spirit in general conquering the odds. And that's a message that we should all take from the film with open arms. Apollo 13 is an outstanding film indeed.

All of the actors involved seemed to have been given parts that they were born to play, because they were so successful in the roles. The true events of the historic Apollo 13 mission are amazingly re-created here, and the results are spectacular. Not only is this film wonderfully acted, it also presents a nearly flawless portrayal of the time period, even down to the slide rulers that were used to do calculations. The audience is literally taken back in time to the 1960's, and all of these universally exciting events are brought back to life, and this is one of the things that makes this movie so special. So many films try to do this, and the vast majority of them fail miserably, so it just feels so good to occasionally see it done right. Another thing that was used in the perfect amount in Apollo 13 was the special effects. I am entirely against excessive special effects, because if they aren't justified in being in the film, they can sometimes ruin the film by themselves remember The Perfect Storm? The special effects in Apollo 13, however, served the film very well. Of course, the most significant special effect in the film, aside from the space scenes, was the zero gravity, which was done flawlessly. I'm just glad that they decided to go up in one of those Zero-G planes for these scenes, rather than have the actors drift lazily around and act as if they are in zero gravity, because that would have taken a lot away from the film. Apollo 13 has an excellent story made even better by the fact that it is true, it has great acting, skillful direction, and plenty of tasteful humor. It is not only a highly entertaining film, but is also educational, which should please parents as if they need any more pleasing than seeing their younger years brought back to life on the silver screen. Definite must-see, Apollo 13 is a contemporary classic. Some might say they love it just for the effects; but I believe that it has a great story, and a perfect selection of actors, perfectly cast. Ed Harris excels, as does Tom Hanks - and Bill Paxton and Kevin Bacon are each superb in their roles. The most wonderful thing about this movie is that it encompasses so many parts and peoples, and appeals to so many, that by the last reel you feel that if they don't make it through, you have lost some of your closest friends. In short: a minor masterpiece. I was fortunate enough to have been a Project Engineer on the Apollo Program, and I am familiar with the technical aspects of the program. But this movie was not as much about the technical aspects of the program as it was about a thrilling, real-life drama that just happened to take place during a glorious time and a once-in-a-lifetime project. Despite all of the little technical errors, Ron Howard and his crew have put together a superb film, one that deserved the 9 Academy Award nominations which it received. I wish that present-day film-makers would concentrate on happy situations, like this one, instead of the constant barrage of drivel to which we, the movie-going public, are made subject. Long live NASA and long live courage.

• Great to see a film about dancing! A relatively unexplored sub-genre of documentary, and Cunningham was welcome for this alone. It adds to a hole that I suppose Wenders' Pina opened.

 

• On that note, this film should not have been shot in 3d, which added nothing but nausia. We expect the 3d was entirely for the purpose of (a) copying Pina and, relatedly, b) getting funding. But Cunningham's dances are far less spectacular and their presentation here likewise. The 3d only distracts from the movement in all but one Warhol-involved set, especially when edited with 2d archival.

 

• First half entertaining, second boring. The film progresses at a monotonous pace: one thing happens and then another and then another. No real conflict or tension.

Which is a problem. Because there evidently was plenty of this, but only in reality. The movie, on the other hand, brushes past unconvincingly. No one in the film is given space apart from Cunningham - everyone else speaks to convince the audience how great he is. I wanted to hear from one of his female dancers honestly, in long form, of the darkness of Cunningham. This would help to flesh out his character, give us something to chew on, and organise the film into a narrative. As is, we grew progressively distrusting and disengaged with the Greatest Hits/ Victory Lap tone, before the film ends suddenly with the news that all his dancers left.

• Ultimately we were left unconvinced that Cunningham (the dancer) was all that interesting. Fashionable certainly, he's attached to the right people, and I'm sure it would be great to be dancing as him, but the just-over-half-full prime-time-at-the-festival cinema was an endless circuit of yawns.

 

• Nevertheless we feel cultured now.

 

The whole car ride on Day 3 gave me anxiety. Excellent and insightful film on the creative genius, Merce Cunningham. The Walker Art Center, a supporter of his creativity and work over several decades, created The Six Sides of Merce Cunningham as part of its ground-breaking exhibition - Common Time - devoted to Merce and his collaborators. The Six Sides of Merce Cunningham Merce Cunningham, considered the most influential choreographer of the 20th century, was a many-sided artist. He was a dance-maker, a fierce collaborator, a chance taker, a boundless innovator, a film producer, and a teacher. During his 70 years of creative practice, Cunningham's exploration forever changed the landscape of dance, music, and contemporary art. During his career, Merce Cunningham created 180 repertory dances and more than 700 Events, in which he knit together movement phrases from past and future works into a choreographic event that could be performed anywhere. The Dance Maker Even at an early age, Merce Cunningham delighted audiences with his physical and expressive abilities, and his compelling stage presence. He had a deep well of energy for performing, a passion that would develop into an unparalleled and prolific career as a choreographer. Cunningham started his own dance company in 1953 and created hundreds of unique choreographic works. Defined by precision and complexity, Cunningham's dances combined intense physicality with intellectual rigor. He challenged traditional ideas of dance, such as the roles of the dancers and the audience, the limitations of the stage, and the relationships between movement and beauty. Cunningham's embrace of an expanded possibility of dance, music, and visual arts reads like a how-to for pushing the boundaries of culture for subsequent generations. The Collaborator In the 1940s, Merce Cunningham and his life partner, composer John Cage, developed a radical new concept: music and dance could exist independently within the same performance. The dancers movements would no longer be tied to the rhythms, mood, and structure of music. Instead, all forms of art could stand alone, simply sharing a common space and time. This idea would become a cornerstone of Cunningham's artistic practice and frame his collaborations with a range of visual artists, composers, filmmakers, dancers, and designers, whom he brought together in this generous spirit and encouraged to experiment and create. The Chance Taker One of Merce Cunninghams most influential strategies was his use of chance and randomness as a creative tool. Cunningham would often flip coins, roll dice, or even consult the I-Ching to guide the way he structured his choreography. This strategy, also favored by John Cage, challenged traditional notions of storytelling in dance. Cunningham described randomness as a way to free his imagination from its own clichés, counterbalancing his own rigorous creative process with unexpected moments of wonder. The Innovator Throughout his career, Merce Cunningham embraced technology in his work from early experiments with television and video to the use of computers, body sensors, and motion capture technology. These tools allowed him to sculpt, animate, and choreograph dance in entirely new ways and reimagine his understanding of the human body. In the 1990s, Cunningham pioneered the use of the computer as a choreographic tool. The software DanceForms could model and animate the human form, allowing Cunningham to visualize sequences and phrases of dance on screen, which he would then translate to a dancer's body. “It expands what we think we can do, ” Cunningham commented about this process. “I think normally the mind gets in the way and says, You can't do that. ” The Film Producer In the 1970s and 80s, Cunningham became interested in creating dance works specifically to be filmed by a camera. Along with filmmakers Charles Atlas and Elliot Caplan, he developed imaginative new ways to capture and present the medium of dance through moving image. At the core of this strategy was the repositioning of the camera as the key part of the choreography, rather than a mere witness to the action. Through video, Cunningham could change perspective, move the camera through the studio, focus on unusual details, adjust scale and tempo, interweave scenes, and surround the viewing audience with movement. Utilizing unusual editing techniques and image manipulation, Cunningham and his collaborators invented a new genre of dance expression, continually pushing its practice in unexpected directions. The Teacher Multiple generations of dancers learned their craft from Merce Cunningham, often through classes he led in his New York studio. His rigorous and physically exacting technique explored, among other things, the idea of individual body parts operating independently of each other. His philosophical teachings were just as influential. He taught his dancers to question commonly held assumptions about dance and the arts, inspiring legions of students through his commitment to experimentation and risk taking. So als wolle er mit einem verteufelten Augenzwinkern schon dort sagen: Sei vom Ende nicht überrascht, du hast es doch schon am Anfang gewusst. In seinem neuen Film Ema, der in Venedig im Wettbewerb Premiere feierte, prüft er den Zuschauer schon bevor die Bilder kommen: Aus den Boxen dröhnt das Knistern von Flammen, die Leinwand bleibt schwarz, genau die eine Sekunde zu lange, um sich zu fragen, ob mit dem Film etwas nicht stimmt, ob die Bildspur ausgefallen ist. Man rutscht nervös im Kinosessel hin- und her — und genau das soll man auch. Ema ist eine Vertrauensübung über 102 Minuten zwischen dem Zuschauer und dem Kunstwerk. Wer sich hier nicht bedingungslos Regisseur und Hauptdarstellerin anvertraut, könnte nämlich versucht sein, das Kino vorschnell zu verlassen, denn „Ema“ ist alles andere als einfach. Die Titelgebende Hauptdarstellerin, grandios intensiv gespielt von Mariana Di Girolamo, hat einen Hunger in ihren einnehmenden großen Augen, das man Angst vor ihr hat. Das passiert so gut wie nie. Hat man sonst doch immer Angst um die Frauen in Filmen, dass sie vergewaltigt werden oder ihnen schreckliche Dinge passieren, dass Männer sie schlagen oder betrügen, dass sie zu schwach scheinen, für das was ihnen da bevorsteht. Nicht so Ema. Diese Frau kennt das Gefühl Angst anscheinend nicht einmal. Sie ist so gnadenlos selbstbewusst und zielstrebig, wie man es sehr, sehr lange nicht mehr in einem Film erlebt hat. Ema ist Tänzerin im chilenischen Valparaiso und lebt zusammen mit Gastón (Gael García Bernal) dem Choreografen ihrer Tanztruppe. Das Paar hatte ein acht Jahre altes Waisenkind aus Kolumbien adoptiert, doch nach nur zwölf Monaten entschied sich die Mutter, ihn „zurückzugeben“, da er mit Feuer spielte und jemanden verletzt hat. Ihr Umfeld reagiert entsetzt über die Entscheidung. Und auch Ema scheint es sich noch einmal überlegt zu haben. Ganz am Anfang ist sie bei der Sozialbeamtin, die sie mit den Worten fortscheucht, dass ihr Sohn längst von einer neuen Familie aufgenommen wurde. Ab da steht fest, Ema wird in den Krieg ziehen, wie es ihre Freundinnen aus der Tanzgruppe formulieren. Was nun folgt, ist ein Feldzug durch die Nacht von Valparaiso, das so etwas wie das Portland Chiles zu sein scheint. Ema tanzt, als hätte sie Sex. Und hat Sex, als gäbe es kein Morgen mehr. Sie hat Gespielinnen, beginnt Affären, besorgt sich einen Feuerwerfer, tritt einen neuen Job an. Es ist der erste Film, in dem Larraín sich nicht mit einem historischen Thema beschäftigt. Er nimmt sich hier die junge Generation Chiles vor. Die, die aus guten Familien stammen, aber sich verwirklichen wollen, die sich um die Zukunft sorgen, die Umwelt ernst nehmen und in ihren Beziehungen die Grenzen von Begriffen wie „Familie“ komplett neu definieren und für die Geschlecht keine Kategorie mehr ist. Der Film nähert sich dieser Generation über Tanz. Er zeigt eine Tanzperformance vor einer pulsierenden Kugel, die im Verlauf der Aufführung immer roter und heißer wird, sodass am Ende die Tänzer vom Schein eines planetaren Feuers verschlungen werden, während ihre Körper im Rhythmus beben. Ema lebt den Tanz. Man sieht sie, wie sie auf einer Hafenmauer ihrem eigenen Rhythmus folgt. Sie übt die Bewegungen nicht. Sie ist der Tanz. In zwei wunderschönen Minuten mutet der Film wie ein Musikvideo an. Kurz hintereinander geschnitten sieht man Ema und ihre Freundinnen zu Reggaeton auf der Straße, im Club, am Hafen, über dem Meer tanzen. Der Choreograph Gastón wird später eine wilde Tirade auf die Dekadenz der Reggaeton-Rhythmen halten, zu der Ema und ihre Freundinnen ihre Hüften kreisen lassen. Für Gastón ist es das Ende der Kunst, für die zwölf Jahre jüngere Ema ist es Freiheit. Überhaupt ist diese Beziehung zu Gastón einer der interessantesten Punkte dieses Films. Die Ruhe mit der sie seine Anschuldigungen hinnimmt, wenn er ihr vorwirft, den Adoptivsohn trotz dessen Liebesbeteuerungen zurückgegeben zu haben, diese Ruhe ist keine Schwäche, im Gegenteil, und das versteht man erst ziemlich spät, speist sie sich aus der Überzeugung, dass sie als Paar doch ganz gut funktionieren, dass sie in ihrer Kunst das gleiche wollen. Nur menschlich muss Gastón eben noch einiges lernen, doch auch dafür wird Ema sorgen. Selten war das Notizbuch am Ende eines Films so voller Sätze mit Fragezeichen. Wer ist hier gut und wer böse? Und kann man dieses Konzept hier überhaupt anwenden? Wie jeder herausragende Geschichtenerzähler gibt auch Larraín nie platte Antworten, seine Figuren sind immer ambivalent. Man konnte in The Club das Handeln jeder Figur mittels gekonnter Erzählung nachvollziehen, sowohl das der Priester, die die Kinder missbraucht hatten, als auch das des Vatikanermittlers, der sich korrumpieren lässt. Man konnte in Post Mortem sowohl die politische Aktivistin verstehen, als auch die Eifersucht ihres Nachbarn. Man hat zu diesen Figuren nicht immer einen emotionalen Zugang, soll heißen, Larraín manipuliert seine Zuschauer nicht dazu, einfach Mitleid mit den Protagonisten zu haben. Er gestaltet seine Figuren lieber so, dass sie intellektuell nachvollziehbar sind. So dass man am Ende weiß, warum sie wie gehandelt haben und trotzdem vor ihren Taten und der Erkenntnis darüber erschrecken kann. Es gibt keine platte Zeigefinger-Moral in diesen Filmen, vielmehr soll der Zuschauer selbst nachdenken und sich ein Bild machen. So wie man in Post Mortem bis zur letzten Szene warten musste, damit sich der Bogen zum ersten Bild des Filmes schließt und die Handlung sich mit dem Schlussstein zusammen puzzeln ließ, so sitzt man auch in Ema gebannt bis zur letzten Minute. Und die muss man auch abwarten, um aus dem Labyrinth in das Ema einen geführt hat, wieder herauszufinden und das Ausmaß der Verstrickungen zu verstehen, für das man alle Hinweise bekommen hat, aber sie eben erst hier komplett zusammensetzen kann. Wie oft passiert so etwas schon? Für gewöhnlich ahnt man doch schon während der Hälfte eines Films, welche zwei, drei Enden nun möglich sind und ist dann nur noch mäßig überrascht, wenn die Figuren sich entscheiden, hofft maximal, wenn man sie halbwegs sympathisch findet, dass ihr Ende nicht die schlimme Variante wird. Ema aber überfährt einen mit jener Wucht, mit der die Hauptfigur durch den Film marschiert. Und man lässt sich gern davon überfahren.

Plot [ edit] Boston law student and part-time mechanic Charlie Farrow ( Patrick Dempsey) was asked by his boss to deliver a new Porsche from Boston to Atlantic City for a client. When he gets close to Atlantic City, the Porsche breaks down. While Charlie waits for the car to be repaired, a cab driver (who mistakes Charlie for being an Atlantic City high roller) takes him to an undercover casino that has a bar room and kitchen, so Charlie can get something to eat. At the casino, Charlie earns the wrath of Denny Halloran (Alan C. Peterson) who takes exception to Charlie beating him at poker. In the resulting fight, Denny trips over a potted palm, accidentally hits his head on the sharp corner of a counter, and dies. Charlie is now on the spot, because Denny happens to be the son of a mob boss named Matt Halloran ( Ken Pogue) who is the owner and despot of the casino and most of the police force, including Chief Travers and Lt. Martins who think Charlie could be innocent. Wrongfully accused of murdering Denny, Charlie finds himself on the run from both dirty cops and Matt's henchmen, all of whom want to collect the 50, 000 bounty that Matt placed on Charlie. With only one ally, reluctant witness Karen Landers ( Kelly Preston) who knows the truth and agrees to aid Charlie, Charlie finds himself in a deadly game of cat and mouse. The bodies pile up as Charlie dodges flying bullets and bowling pins, explosions from numerous assault weapons and miscellaneous shrapnel and twisted auto parts as he is pursued on a nightmare race through racetracks, amusement parks, bowling alleys and shopping malls by Matt's men, corrupt cops and Travers and Martins. After Karen is wounded and two dirty cops die chasing him Charlie surrenders himself to Travers and Martins but they are pursued by two of Matt's men, Sammy and Marv, and run off the road, Travers is killed and Martins is injured. Sammy and Marv take Charlie to Matt who tells them to kill Charlie, however, he kills Marv then Sammy by causing them to fall off of a roof. After killing Matt's other henchmen, Charlie and Matt confront each other at Matt's dog-race track. Matt dies as he is impaled by a mechanical pacer rabbit that was speeding toward him. Martins arrives after this and tells Charlie that "they sure fooled with the wrong guy" before placing a reassuring hand on Charlie's shoulder. What's the story? In RUN THE RACE, promising high school football player Zach (Tanner Stine) and his virtuous brother, David (Evan Hofer) have endured two years of life's worst hardships, including their mother's death, their father's abandonment, a life-changing injury, and financial distress. The brothers work hard, with the goal of improving their lives by earning a college athletic scholarship, but then that door seems to close, too. With both of the brothers sustaining injuries that seem insurmountable, they take different approaches to life -  one running away from God, the other embracing him. Is it any good? For Christian families who prefer to watch faith-based films, this film is a winner. But kids who think Sundays are for sleeping in probably won't like it. or get it. So maybe it's appropriate that  Run the Race  is all about those types of opposing views. The story is a biblical exploration of how to deal when life keeps handing you lemons, and then the pitcher that's holding the lemonade shatters. Like the Bible's Job, Zach and David are having a really rough go of things -  it almost seems like life is trolling them. The brothers handle their circumstances differently: One embraces his faith as a coping mechanism, while the other has a chip on his shoulder. But in a film full of stereotypes, these two avoid clichés by avoiding extremes: God-loving David doesn't preach so much as live by example, and God-doubting Zach isn't a rage machine but rather handles his frustrations with acceptance. The boys are surrounded by gentle adults who listen and encourage them. But their conversations are almost entirely about their faith. More casual Christians may be on board until the movie's end; no spoilers, but it may be a deal-breaker for all but the most devout. The filmmaking quality in Run the Race is on the better side for movies in the faith-based genre. It's not amazing, but it's not distracting. Still, the tropes are annoying: We get two flags, a Bible, a church, and country music in the first 10 minutes alone. And for all the answers the film provides to nagging Christian quandaries, it creates more questions. One in particular: The resolution involves cheating that's endorsed by all the adults and the faithful. Huh? Talk to your kids about... Families can talk about the adversity that Zach and David endure in Run the Race. How does Zach's attitude change? Why do you think he's able to be a forgiving person after tragedy?
